2016 has been a big year for Sezzle. Heck, it’s been our only year! Our CEO, Charlie, incorporated Sezzle in January and we’ve been slowly adding to the team and the dream ever since. We won the Fintech Prize at the Minnesota Cup startup competition in September. We oversubscribed our seed round, which closed in November. And we’re on the cusp of launching an eCommerce payment platform that we believe will disrupt online payments as we know it.
But we believe 2017 will be even bigger! Here are the 6 things we’re looking forward to most in 2017. We hope to connect with all of you around one or more of these important events.
1. Sezzle Launch
Many of you have been waiting patiently. We’ve spent the better part of 2016 fine-tuning our payment platform to ensure it’s a better way to pay than any other online method, for merchants and consumers alike. Sezzle will save merchants money on processing fees. It will reward consumers with cash back and discounts for paying with easy, fast, secure digital debit. And we have many more grand designs in the works. But first things first. We must launch! And launch we will, with several dozen online stores powered by Shopify. Stay tuned for more formal announcements ahead.
2. Same Day ACH Debits
Currently, most ACH payments are settled on the next business day. This is pretty fast, but it’s going to get much faster! Beginning September 15, Same Day ACH will be available for debit entries, enabling the same-day processing of virtually any ACH payment. Same Day ACH for credit entries was put in place this past September, so come this next September, the circle will be complete. Sezzle’s already fast flow of funds will accelerate significantly.
3. Shopify Unite 2017
Shopify is quickly becoming the leading eCommerce platform in the world. Because of their stellar reputation and open-source platform, we chose Shopify as our go-to-market channel, building an integration with their platform to allow any of their 300,000+ online stores to accept Sezzle at checkout. We look forward to attending their conference in San Francisco, April 20-21, to gain an insider’s look into Shopify’s platform and where they believe the world of commerce is headed.
4. Shoptalk 2017
Shoptalk is a huge new retail and ecommerce event that covers the rapid evolution of how consumers discover, shop, and buy – from new technologies and business models, to changes in consumer preferences and expectations. Sezzle will have a booth on startup row and (crossing our fingers) hopes to be presenting in their startup pitch competition. Shoptalk takes place March 19-22 in Las Vegas.
5. National Merchant Day
National Merchant Day is hosted by PYMNTS.com and celebrates the latest in payments innovation, bringing together merchants, solution providers, and consumers to recognize those who transform the shopping experience. Sezzle will have a StoreFront Kiosk in the Innovation Showcase area at the beautiful Tribeca Rooftop in Manhattan. The big day is February 16.
We are headquartered in Minneapolis. As I write this post, a storm that is expected to drop upwards of 12” of snow is dropping its first few flakes. And if that’s not enough, a polar vortex is following close behind that will push windchills to -40F. The months of December and January in this city are not for the faint of heart. We will undoubtedly be spending the vast majority of our time working in perpetual darkness, interrupted by the occasional scraping of windshields and reapplying of lotion to our dry, cold skin.
Okay, it’s really not all that bad. There’s nothing quite like a bluebird sky the morning after a heavy snowfall. Or cross country skiing across a frozen city lake. But that doesn’t mean we’re not already looking forward to summer, where there is truly nowhere we’d rather be than Minnesota.
